Heartgard Plus contains two active ingredients, Ivermectin (272 mcg) and Pyrantel (227 mg). Ivermectin is anti-parasitic, which treats multiple parasite infections and pyrantel is a strong anthelmintic. Together these compounds control the nerve impulses that flow through the neurological system of the worm, thus causing paralysis. The paralysis causes the death of the worms which are then removed from the body.

Heartgard from Budget Vet CareI don't know how good this product is since it's my dog who takes it, but she likes the taste just fine and it appears to do its job. Budget Vet Care (BVC) is the greatest find I have discovered yet. They have the same necessary preventative medicines but at roughly half the price; like people meds, I think pet meds are unnecessarily priced. I admit I was a little hesitant to order the first time since the meds I get for my dog are prescription in the U.S., and no Rx is needed with BVC, but I'm not sure a prescription should be necessary after the first time. I mean, it's the same thing every month, every year. If I'm paying attention to my dog and to the packaging, it should work fine. I'm grateful to BVC for offering these "meds" without requiring an Rx and for an excellent budget price. BVC is invaluable, IMO..
