FAQ About Drontal for Pet

What is Drontal?

Drontal is a broad-spectrum treatment for pets infected with gastrointestinal worms that include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. A single dose is strong enough to eliminate all forms of worms from the cat’s intestines then be it juvenile or adult.

How Drontal Works?

Drontal is constituted from three active components Praziquantel, Febantel and Pyrantel Embonate that work synergistically to eliminate these worms. Praziquantel kills tapeworms by damaging the skin of the parasite from the inside which eventually disintegrates the body of tapeworms and they are then eliminated from the body via stools.  Pyrantel embonate, on the other hand, traverses the nervous system of the hookworms and ascarids, paralyzes them by sudden contractions and renders them lose in the intestines. They eventually get removed from the digestive tract of the pet through fecal elimination. The third ingredient, Febantel attacks whipworms (nematodes).

How Often Should Drontal Be Given To Dogs/Cats?

Adult dogs must be treated with Drontal every 3 months and cats every 2 months. In case of heavy flea infestation in your pet, the dose may have to be increased to once every month or every 14 days.  Adult pets must be dewormed at least once per year.

How Can I Give Drontal To My Pet?

Since the tablets are meat-flavored, you won’t face any problem in administering them to your pet. Still, it’s totally your preference whether you like to institute it directly into his mouth or mix it in his food.

What Should Be The Minimum Age Of My Puppy To Treat Him With Drontal?

Dogs are often born with roundworm larvae in their system which they inherited from their mother while still in the womb. Hence, you need to treat your pup as soon as his inborn immunity withers off i.e. 2 weeks after the birth. Pets must be dewormed once every 2 weeks until the age of 6 months for complete protection against further infections. Pups are quite vulnerable to infections due to low immunity in their early stage; therefore, make sure they are wormed frequently as stated.

How Can I Tell If My Cat Has Worms?

You should be alarmed if your cat scoots a lot or rubs his hind against objects because the released segments of tapeworms result in itching in the bottom. Check for white rice-grain-like segments of tapeworms in his stools. Apart from that, the more obvious signs of heavy worm infection include – vomiting, diarrhea, dull and lifeless coat, loss of appetite, lethargy and potbellied appearance of the pet.

Are There Any Side Effects Of Drontal?

In rare cases where a pet might be allergic to one of the components of Drontal, he may suffer from vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea or may lose his appetite. Therefore, you must always check whether your pet is allergic to any of the ingredients in the product or not. If he is, better switch to different treatment.

Can I Give Flea Treatment Along With Drontal?

Yes, Drontal can be safely used in conjunction with flea treatments. In fact, it is better to combine the two treatments for complete protection against fleas as well as intestinal worms. Fleas are also carriers of tapeworms thus using a flea treatment along with Drontal actually provides added protection against tapeworm infection.

What Should I Do If I Have Overdosed My Pet?

If you find any adverse signs in your pet after you overdosed him/her, consult your veterinarian immediately.

My Pet Isn’t Showing Signs, Should I Still Worm Him?

Well, your pet may be absolutely healthy and fit but sometimes there are no visible signs which can tell you your pet needs to be wormed. Also, roundworms can be transferred to humans so it is better to deworm your pet regularly to keep him risk-free and in turn help yourself from getting an unnecessary infection.
