July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month

Many times in summers, we think that our pets will stay cool by splashing in the pool or getting in the tub with us. But well, that’s not going to keep them safe from the sweltering heat.

Sun shines brighter during the hotter days, which may quickly lead to dehydration, if not taken care of. The only full-proof way to save our fur babies from the scorching heat is to keep them hydrated.

July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month, and a time to raise awareness about hydration in pets. With July being the hottest month of the year, here’s why and how you should encourage your pets to drink enough water.

Why Dehydration Can Be Life-Threatening For Cats & Dogs?

Did you know that our pets’ bodies are comprised of more water than us? This means they need a little more water than us per pound of bodyweight. Unfortunately, this requirement isn’t always met, leading to dehydration in pets.

Extreme dehydration in pets may also result in death, so it is crucial to keep an eye on its symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms Of Hydration In Pets?

The signs of dehydration in cats and dogs include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Dry nose
  • Sunken eyes
  • Heavy panting
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry, sticky  gums

How Can You Make Your Pet Drink More Water?

Tip #1 Keep Clean, Fresh, and Cool Water Available

Your pet should have easy access to clean, fresh water at all times. Ensuring there are enough water bowls available both in indoor and outdoor areas is especially crucial for pets that spend time in both environments.

Tip #2 Provide Low-Sodium Chicken or Beef Broth for a Change

Given the bland taste of water, it is a good idea to make hydration palatable. Dogs would definitely love a delicious chicken or beef broth instead of water. You can also add pieces of meat into the broth.

Tip #3 Feed Fruits with High Water Content

Many pets enjoy eating a variety of fruits. Many fruits have high water content and can aid hydration. But make sure the fruits you’re feeding are safe for them to eat or not.

Tip #4 Switch to Wet Food

Dry dog food is great, but pets love the texture of wet food as it is easy to eat. By switching to wet dog food, you can easily increase your pet’s water intake with their meals.

Tip #5 Pupsicles

A fun idea to entice your pet to drink extra water is to freeze pet-friendly ice popsicles. Add some wet food and water, or a blended mixture of any fruit to an ice-lollies mold, and freeze it overnight for a tasty treat!

Tip #6 Carry Extra Water Bottles on the Go

Whenever you take your dog on a long journey or a walk, carry an extra water bottle for your pet. Water may not be easily available when you’re out and about, hence doing so will keep your pet suitably hydrated.

Tip #7 Motivate Your Pet to Drink Often

Positive reinforcement is a smart way to increase your dog’s water intake. Simply praising your dog with compliments or giving them treats will motivate your dog to earn more rewards.
